New Contest Hopes To Make Meetings in the Valley a Win-Win
While many Alberni residents are used to travelling to Island destinations such as Parksville, Nanaimo, and Victoria to attend meetings and conferences, this year there is a new reason to stick close to home.
Alberni Valley Tourism has launched a new contest called “Have Your Meetings at Home,” asking local groups, clubs, and associations to “pitch” the idea of hosting a meeting or conference in the Alberni Valley to their provincial and national counterparts.
Jonathan Cross, Chair of Alberni Valley Tourism, says that the contest is trying to get local residents to become ambassadors for the Alberni Valley’s meetings and conference facilities.
“Lots of us belong to groups and associations,” says Mr. Cross, “So if your provincial or national counterparts are looking for a destination to hold a conference or meet-up, the Alberni Valley is one option to consider. This is a great way to show off Alberni to your peers. And it could really help bring new business into our restaurants, shops, and hotels.”
There are three prizes up for grabs. One group that has a meeting or conference in the Alberni Valley in 2012 will win $500. There is also an Event Planning Package (five hours of event planning to help book hotel rooms and organize activities). One group will also be sent home with a “Come Back & Play” prize designed to encourage conference and meeting attendees to return as tourists in 2013 with their friends and family.
Local hotels and merchants have pitched in and are offering local coupons and group deals to every group that hosts a meeting in Alberni this year.
To enter the contest, Alberni groups, clubs, and associations are invited to request a ‘pitch package.’ This package has special incentives, brochures, and local deals—all designed to help residents to sell the idea of hosting a meeting or conference close to home.
If you’d like to request a pitch package on behalf of your Alberni group, club, or association please email info@AlberniValleyMeetings.com or call 250-479-3863.

Alberni Valley Tourism Council Launches New “Meetings” Website
The Alberni Valley Tourism Council has launched a new website aimed at encouraging local groups and associations to invite their provincial or national counterparts to host their meetings in the Alberni Valley.
The new website features information about hotel group rates and meetings facilities, a local event calendar, and special incentives for interested groups.
According to Jonathan Cross, the Committee Chair of the Alberni Valley Tourism Council, the website is designed to help local groups and associations “pitch” the idea of the Alberni Valley as an option for conferences or annual meetings.
“The website showcases our strengths as a meetings and conference destination,” says Mr. Cross. “We have great hotels, group activities, and affordable meeting spaces. And we hope that more people realize that you can host a great meeting or conference right here in the Alberni Valley.”
You can view the new website at www.albernivalleymeetings.com.
