Each September, the streets of Port Alberni, a picturesque town on Vancouver Island, come alive with the rumble of hundreds of motorcycles. Riders from all over Vancouver Island, British Columbia and beyond gather for the annual Port Alberni Toy Run, a cherished tradition that blends the thrill of riding with the spirit of giving. This event, now an integral part of the community, has a rich history and a profound impact on local charities. What started with eight riders delivering a few toys to the Salvation Army on their bikes just before Christmas in 1984 has now grown into an event that attracts upwards of 1,500 motorcycles to Port Alberni each September.
Participants gather at Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park on Saturday morning at 10 am for free bike registration. The cannon goes off at noon, signaling over 1,000 bikes to ride into Port Alberni to the Glenwood Centre (Port Alberni Fairgrounds) for bike games, a show & shine, vendors, kids’ games, and a beer garden. Riders are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy or donate money.
The Saturday night dance features Johnny Inappropriate and the Maloomba Boogie Band. Tickets are first available to riders on Saturday morning at Little Qualicum Falls, and then to the general public at 1 PM at Glenwood Centre.
A Brief History of the Port Alberni Toy Run
The Port Alberni Toy Run began in 1984 when a small group of motorcyclists decided to give back to their community by organizing a ride to collect toys for children in need. What started as a modest event has since grown into one of the largest and most anticipated charity rides on Vancouver Island.
Celebrating its 40th year in 2024, the Toy Run has come a long way. From just a handful of participants in its early days, it now attracts more than 1,000 riders annually. The Toy Run motorcycle ride has evolved significantly to include a full weekend of activities, many of them family-oriented, that bring the community together in a celebration of generosity and goodwill.
The Ride: A Sight to Behold
The Toy Run typically kicks off with a parade of motorcycles winding its way through the streets of Port Alberni. The sight of hundreds of bikers, many of whom decorate their bikes with stuffed animals, tinsel, and festive lights, is truly spectacular. Spectators line the route, cheering on the riders and enjoying the festive atmosphere.
The parade ends at Glenwood Centre (Port Alberni Fairgrounds), where the weekend’s festivities begin. The sense of camaraderie among the riders is palpable, with participants often traveling from far and wide to take part in the event. The riders’ shared purpose—to bring joy to children and support local charities—creates a powerful sense of unity.
A Weekend of Activities
The Toy Run has grown to include a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the weekend. The Glenwood Centre transforms into a hub of entertainment, featuring live music, a show & shine for motorcycles, games, and a beer garden. There’s something for everyone, from kids’ activities to opportunities for adults to relax and enjoy the festivities.
One of the highlights of the weekend is the auction, where a wide array of items donated by local businesses are up for grabs. The auction is a significant fundraiser, with all proceeds going directly to local charities. The generosity of the community is evident in the high-quality items donated and the enthusiastic bidding that takes place.
The Impact: Donations and Community Support
The primary goal of the Port Alberni Toy Run is to collect toys and funds for local children’s charities. Each year, the event gathers thousands of toys, which are distributed to families in need during the holiday season. The toys are donated to organizations such as the Salvation Army and the Alberni Valley Community School, ensuring that children throughout the area have a brighter Christmas.
In addition to toys, the Toy Run raises substantial funds that support a wide range of local charities. Over the years, the event has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars, which have been used to support youth programs, food banks, and other community initiatives. The Toy Run’s impact is felt throughout the year, as the funds raised continue to benefit the community long after the motorcycles have departed.
A Legacy of Giving
The Port Alberni Toy Run is more than just a motorcycle ride; it’s a symbol of the generosity and community spirit that defines Port Alberni. What began as a small act of kindness has grown into a powerful force for good, bringing joy to countless children and providing vital support to local charities.
