Award-winning Indigenous theatre comes to Port Alberni this July as Reconciliation Theatre presents Women of the Fur Trade, the critically acclaimed comedy by playwright Frances Koncan.

Part of Reconciliation Theatre’s fourth annual Vancouver Island summer tour, this witty historical satire follows three women living in the fur trade era as they navigate love, friendship, identity, and survival. Blending modern humour with Canadian history, the play offers a fresh perspective on the past while exploring themes that remain relevant today.

Set “eighteen hundred and something-something” along the banks of the Red River, the story centres on Marie-Angélique, Eugenia, and Cecilia—three unforgettable women whose conversations are filled with sharp wit, contemporary slang, and plenty of unexpected twists. As romance, rebellion, and rivalries unfold, Women of the Fur Trade challenges familiar historical narratives through an Indigenous and female lens.

Praised by critics for its humour, originality, and timely storytelling, this acclaimed production has captivated audiences across Canada.

Tickets are free, but advance reservations are recommended.
