Sail the Alberni Inlet Aboard the MV Frances Barkley

Experience Vancouver Island’s wild west coast aboard the MV Frances Barkley, Lady Rose Marine Services’ historic working packet freighter. Departing from Port Alberni, the journey travels the length of the Alberni Inlet toward the remote coastal community of Bamfield, offering spectacular mountain and ocean scenery along the way.

MV Frances Barkley sailing through the Alberni Inlet

The MV Frances Barkley carries passengers and freight between Port Alberni and Bamfield.

More than a sightseeing cruise, the Frances Barkley provides an essential transportation and freight service to remote communities throughout the Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound. Along the journey, passengers may see stops at places such as Kildonan and Haggard Cove as the vessel delivers passengers, supplies and freight. Keep an eye out for wildlife too, including eagles, seals, black bears and whales.

In Bamfield, day-trip passengers have time to experience this historic coastal community before the return voyage to Port Alberni. The Frances Barkley also features indoor and outdoor seating and an onboard galley serving food and beverages.

Sailing Schedule

The MV Frances Barkley sails to Bamfield Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday year-round, departing Port Alberni at 8:00 a.m. and returning at approximately 5:00 p.m. Reservations are highly recommended.

Winter schedule: From October 1 to May 1, the vessel departs Bamfield once freight deliveries are complete rather than remaining until the regular 1:30 p.m. departure time.
