Operated by Lady Rose Marine Services, this working vessel carries passengers, freight, and stories along the Alberni Inlet and into Barkley Sound.

A Coastal Journey Through the Alberni Inlet

The day begins early at the harbour in Port Alberni. Boarding starts around 7:30 a.m., with departure just after 8. As the Frances Barkley sets out, the hum of the engine fades into the background and you’re left with sweeping views of the surrounding forested hills, steep rock faces, and the occasional eagle overhead.

This isn’t just a sightseeing tour—it’s also a vital link for people living in remote locations like Kildonan and Haggard Cove. As the boat pulls up to tiny docks and delivers mail, groceries, and supplies, there’s a real sense of what life looks like beyond the road’s end. Time on Land: A Glimpse of Bamfield

By midday, the Frances Barkley arrives in Bamfield, a small, coastal village set within Huu-ay-aht (traditional territory). The Huu-ay-aht First Nations are part of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples and have lived along these coastal lands for countless generations. Their governance, stewardship, and cultural presence continue to shape Bamfield’s identity and future.

The village itself is quiet and welcoming, home to both a working harbour and the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, a well-known research and education hub. Many visitors take a walk along the historic wooden boardwalk on the west side, where local homes and businesses are tucked beside the water. A short stroll can bring you to a beach, a quiet café, or simply a good view of life at a different pace. For those up for a little hike, the trail to Brady’s Beach is worth the time—sea stacks, old growth, and the open Pacific offer a powerful glimpse of coastal wilderness.

Planning Your Trip

A day trip to Bamfield aboard the MV Frances Barkley is a full-day experience, with sailings available several times a week. Here’s what to know before you go:

Sailing Schedule:

  • Departures from Port Alberni: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays year-round
  • Summer Extras: Select Sunday sailings (check online schedule)
  • Departure Time: 8:00 a.m. (arrive at dock by 7:15–7:30 a.m.)
  • Return Arrival: Approximately 5:30–6:00 p.m. in Port Alberni

Rates (as of 2024):

  • Adults: ~$95 round trip
  • Seniors (65+): ~$85
  • Youth (13–18): ~$70
  • Children (5–12): ~$50
  • Under 5: Free

Onboard Amenities:

  • Cafeteria: Hot and cold beverages, baked goods, soups, sandwiches, and light snacks
  • Seating: Indoor and outdoor seating available; dress for the weather if sitting on deck

⚠️ 2025 Refit & Schedule Update

Lady Rose Marine Services has announced the following changes and service updates:

  • The Frances Barkley is undergoing a refit and is scheduled to resume sailings April 1, 2025.
  • During this period, no sailings are available. For the latest updates, call the Lady Rose office directly.
  • Winter Schedule Change (starting October 1, 2024):
    • The vessel will no longer remain in Bamfield until 1:30 p.m.
    • Return departure will occur immediately after freight delivery is complete.
  • Additional Sunday Sailings (Summer 2025):
    • July 13 & 27
    • August 10 & 24
