Reel in the Fun at Alberni’s Favourite Fishing Tradition

The Port Alberni Salmon Festival is a beloved annual event that brings fishing enthusiasts and families together at the scenic Alberni Inlet every Labour Day weekend. Each year, approximately 1,500 participants compete in the renowned Salmon Derby, hoping to reel in prize-winning catches. The largest catch on record remains an impressive 60-pound, eight-ounce Chinook salmon from 1982, while the 2023 Derby winner landed a 23-pound, four-ounce Chinook.

Recently relocated from Clutesi Haven Marina, the festival now takes place at Tyee Landing and Harbour Quay/Argyle Pier. Despite challenges in recent years, the Salmon Festival Society is excited to revive beloved traditions, including the beer tent, delicious salmon dinners, engaging entertainment, and plenty of activities for the entire family.
