Port Alberni, British Columbia

Since its official beginnings in 2013, the year-round Spirit Square Farmers’ Market provides a venue for the Valley community and local farmers to interface with one another, every Saturday morning.

Whether through sponsoring an agricultural student’s education, offering local musicians an opportunity to play, or encourage inclusive access to healthy foods, the market’s involvement reaches beyond its physical presence in the community.

The Spirit Square Farmers’ Market is a participant of the BC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program. Households enrolled in the program may receive a weekly minimum of $21 in coupons.

Community organizations and BCAFM member farmer’s markets, along with assistance from the Province of British Columbia, the Provincial Health Services Authority and additional community donors, have collaborated to create this fully operational program. The program has been running since 2007 and serves over 79 communities throughout BC.
