Summer in the Alberni Valley

A Music Lover’s Guide to the Season’s Best Festivals

There’s something about Vancouver Island air — that mix of cedar, saltwater, and lake breeze — that makes outdoor live music hit differently. Nowhere is that more true than the Alberni Valley, where Port Alberni’s summer calendar fills up with festivals, concerts, and community celebrations built around live music. Whether you’re planning a weekend trip or a full summer itinerary, here’s your rundown of the can’t-miss music and festival events.

Funtastic Music Festival — June 27–28

Kicking off the summer in style, the Funtastic Music Festival returns to Bob Dailey Stadium for two nights of live music over Canada Day weekend, running alongside the long-running Okee Dokee Slo-Pitch Tournament. This 19+ event pairs a day of ball-field action with an evening of touring and local talent. The 2026 lineup features Econoline Crush, an Eagles tribute act called Eagle Eyes, Los Borrachos, The Porter Brothers, End In M, and Upstairs Neighbors, covering everything from rock to country to high-energy cover sets.

Gates open at 5:30 PM each night, and wristbands ($40, cash only) are available locally at Cloverdale Paints. It’s a laid-back, community-driven atmosphere — the kind of festival where you’ll run into half the town. Since 2013, the connected slo-pitch tournament has raised over $150,000 for local sports and youth programs, so your weekend out also supports the community.

Sproat Lake Regatta — July 11–12

For a different kind of summer tradition, the Sproat Lake Regatta dates back to 1928 and combines water sports, boat races, and swimming competitions with live entertainment on the lakeshore. It’s less of a dedicated music festival and more of a full-day community celebration — a good pick if you want to pair your live music with a swim.

Historically known as “Lightning on the Lake,” the Sproat Lake Regatta takes place July 11–12, 2026 at Sproat Lake Provincial Park in Port Alberni, BC. This high-octane event is free for spectators to view from the shoreline or the water, high-speed boat racing. Watch thunderous drag boats (flats, jets, outboards), Formula 40 Circuit Racing, and powerful Formula 1 boats tear up the water.
Spectator Tips: Bring your lawn chairs, sunscreen, and snacks. Parking is available in the upper lots. Join the Alberni Valley Regatta Association Group to connect with other attendees, check out boat launch info, and follow local event sponsorships.

Rotary Colour Fest Alberni

Rotary Colour Fest — July 18

Not every great music event in the valley is ticketed and 19+. Rotary Colour Fest is a free, family-friendly festival at Blair Park that pairs a colour-powder walk along the Kitsuksis Dyke Trail with an afternoon festival featuring live music, food trucks, local vendors, and kids’ activities like face painting, bouncy castles, and the splash park. It’s a great option if you’re travelling with family and still want some live music in the mix. All proceeds support local youth programs.

Live Music On a Weekly Basis

If your visit doesn’t line up with one of the bigger festival weekends, the Alberni Valley still delivers. Char’s Landing hosts a regular calendar of live performances spanning jazz, blues, and folk, including a Sunday Jazz Social every week from 6–8 PM. It’s a relaxed, low-key way to catch local musicians any week of the summer. The KCC – Concert Hall & Social House also books touring acts throughout the season, so it’s worth checking their schedule before you go.

Planning Your Trip

A few practical notes for festival-hopping in the valley:

  • Most major festivals are 19+ (Funtastic, Five Acre Shaker), so plan accordingly if you’re travelling with kids — Rotary Colour Fest and the Regatta are better family options.
  • Tickets and wristbands often sell out or are cash-only at the door — buying early online where available is the safer bet.
  • Event details shift year to year, so it’s worth double-checking dates, lineups, and ticket links on each festival’s official site or Alberni Valley Tourism closer to your travel dates.

However you time your visit, the Alberni Valley’s summer lineup makes a strong case for building a trip around the music — long festival weekends bookended by lake swims, hiking, and the kind of small-town hospitality Vancouver Island is known for.
