Just recently the outside world has discovered what locals have known for a long time. There is a regular strong afternoon breeze up the Alberni Inlet in the summer. Due to these strong winds, the Alberni Valley is becoming a haven for windsurfing.

Where to Go Windsurfing

Ask at the Visitor Centre about trails and maps. Port Alberni Cycling Club has trails and organized rides.

  • Canal Beach offers windsurfing as well as kite surfing and kayaking.

Vancouver Island is one of the best places to kayak in the world. And the Alberni Valley is no exception. Here you can rent a kayak or dip your own into the Alberni Inlet, or, if you prefer fresh water try out the warm summertime water of Sproat Lake.

The Alberni Valley has two amazing shore dive spots near Port Alberni: China Creek Wall Dive and Ship Wreck (Chinese Immigrant Ship Wreck).

Port Alberni, also known as the Salmon Capital of the World, was designated as the World Fishing Network’s first “Ultimate Fishing Town 2010.” Anglers can find an abundance of both river and ocean fishing in the Alberni Valley because the port is located at the end of a long arm of the ocean with many rivers flowing in to it.
