Arts in the Alberni Valley

The Alberni Valley has a rich and varied arts and heritage culture. Explore our Arts District, where you’ll find murals and paintings, as well as local art galleries. Our cultural sites – the Alberni Valley Museum, Railway, or Maritime Discovery Centre – provide wonderful examples of the area’s heritage and culture.

Where to Discover Alberni Art and Heritage

Rollin Art Centre – A fine arts gallery in the heart of Port Alberni, with a lovely Japanese garden.

Port Alberni Waterfront Studio Gallery – Janice Sheehan is a watercolour artist who maintains a small gallery in the summer at Harbour Quay.

Naesgaard’s Farm Market – Although not a gallery per se, it has an eclectic mix of garden decorations, gifts and memorabilia, besides its more traditional produce and garden centre. Think Coombs Market on a more intimate scale.

Alberni Valley Museum – Learn about early life in the Alberni Valley, with fishing, agricultural and logging memorabilia.

Alberni Pacific Railway – An historic train ride on a 1929 Baldwin ex-logging locomotive. The 35-minute trip goes to the McLean Mill National Historic Site,

McLean Mill National Historic Site – The only remaining steam-operated sawmill in Canada, featuring live demonstrations of the sawmill and old time logging techniques, more than 30 restored buildings and a musical revue.

The Maritime Discovery Centre – Besides exhibits about maritime trade and industry, you’ll find a fascinating exhibit about the tsunami that hit Port Alberni in 1964.
