Kiteboarding in Port Alberni
Strong Thermal Winds Make Port Alberni a Top Vancouver Island Destination for High-flying Kiteboarding!
If you’re an outdoor enthusiasts seeking an adrenaline rush on the water, look no further than our own Alberni Valley. While we are definitely known for our stunning landscapes and laid-back lifestyle, we’re also building a strong reputation as a prime destination for kiteboarding.
Kiteboarding, combining elements of wakeboarding, windsurfing, and paragliding, has found its perfect home in Port Alberni thanks to our ideal wind conditions, beautiful beaches, and welcoming kiteboarding community. Let’s take a closer look at what makes Port Alberni a top spot for this thrilling ocean sport.
Chasing the Wind
Port Alberni is uniquely situated between the Beaufort Mountains and the Alberni Inlet. This geographical setting results in creating a wind tunnel effect, where the natural topography funnels and accelerates wind. As the prevailing winds are funneled through the valley, they gain speed and intensity, creating ideal and consistent conditions for kiteboarding. Perhaps even more importantly are the thermal winds that also come into play thanks to our proximity to the warm waters of Alberni Inlet and the cold peaks of the Beaufort Mountain range. Needless to say, kiteboarders can count on a steady and predictable wind flow all throughout the summer season (May – September), which is essential for executing tricks and maneuvers on the water.
