The End of Summer Doesn’t Mean the End of Fun!
As the warm days of summer slowly turn to the crisp embrace of autumn, the Alberni Valley comes alive with a host of fun activities that allow you to squeeze out a little more from the final moments of the season. Port Alberni offers a list of exciting family friendly events, from our vibrant Alberni District Fall Fair, the always-exciting annual Salmon Festival & Derby to our (also annual) Port Alberni Toy Run. There’s no shortage of ways to ‘say farewell’ to summer while hopefully creating some new and cherished memories.
Salmon Festival & Derby
Known as “Canada’s Fishing Capital” the annual Salmon Festival and Derby is one of Port Alberni’s premier events. Going back more than 50 years the Festival’s roots are deeply intertwined with the the Alberni Valley’s rich fishing history. The highlight of the event is the Salmon Derby, on the waters of the Alberni Inlet, anglers test their skills in pursuit of reeling in the largest salmon ($5000 cash prize!). Hosted by the Alberni Valley Tyee Club, this 3 day, fun-filled, family friendly event is inclusive to all ages (in fact, last year’s winner was 14-year old Justin McKay). Alberni District Fall Fair
The Alberni District Fall Fair is a highlight not to be missed. With a rich history dating back almost an entire century, this lively event offers an array of attractions, from thrilling rides to live entertainment and plenty of tempting treats. Immerse yourself in the nostalgic atmosphere, celebrate local talent, and enjoy the sense of community that comes from being a part of one of the Alberni Valley’s favourite traditions.

Annual Toy Run
The Port Alberni Toy Run brings together motorcycle enthusiasts and the local community for a meaningful cause. The event combines the thrill of a motorcycle rally with a charitable mission. Every year, riders come together to participate in a parade through the town, showcasing their impressive array of motorcycles while carrying donated toys and gifts. Both gifts and donations are collected and given to children and families in the area (via various local charities), who may be in need during the holiday season, spreading goodwill and cheer throughout the community. Both days are filled with fun for the whole family with food, games and even a dance!
